North Stars Alum Josh Kotai Named CCHA Player of the Year

There are moments in a program’s history that quietly define what it truly stands for not just wins, but the people it shapes along the way.

Today, we celebrate one of those moments.

Battlefords North Stars alumnus Josh Kotai has been named the CCHA (NCAA Division I) Player of the Year, adding to an already remarkable list of honours this season, including CCHA Goaltender of the Year and a First Team All-CCHA selection.

For those who watched Kotai during his time in Battlefords, this recognition comes as no surprise, it feels like a continuation of something we all witnessed begin here.

From Battlefords to the National Stage

Kotai, now 22, was a cornerstone of the North Stars during the 2022–23 season—one of the most memorable runs in recent franchise history.

He backstopped the team to an SJHL Championship and a National Silver Medal, while earning SJHL SaskTel Goaltender of the Year honours.

That season, he delivered elite numbers:

  • 32-4-3 record
  • 2.39 goals-against average
  • .935 save percentage

And when it mattered most, he elevated even further in the playoffs:

  • 12-1-0 record
  • 1.72 GAA
  • .945 save percentage

There was a calmness to his game, something you can’t teach. A quiet confidence that spread through the bench, the locker room, and the entire building.

Making History at Augustana

Now with the University of Augustana, Kotai has taken that same presence and turned it into a historic NCAA season.

In 2025–26, he:

  • Posted a 20-10-4 record
  • Maintained a 1.99 GAA
  • Recorded a .938 save percentage
  • Made 1,030 saves
  • Earned 5 shutouts

More importantly, he became the first player in Augustana program history to be named CCHA Player of the Year.

Behind his performance, the Vikings allowed just 72 goals in 36 games, establishing themselves as one of the top defensive teams in the conference.

Game after game, Kotai proved to be the difference delivering clutch performances, high-save nights, and the kind of consistency that builds winning programs.

A Reflection of the North Stars Standard

There’s something deeper in achievements like this.

It’s not just about awards it’s about progression.

It’s about a player who came through Battlefords, embraced the work, carried the expectations, and continues to rise.

Kotai’s success is a reflection of:

  • The culture inside our locker room
  • The standard our players hold themselves to
  • And the belief that development here doesn’t end when players leave it evolves

Looking Ahead

As Kotai continues his journey at the NCAA level, we take pride in knowing that a part of his foundation was built right here in Battlefords.

And for the next generation of North Stars, his story becomes something more than recognition

It becomes a blueprint.

Congratulations, Josh. Once a North Star, always a North Star. 🖤
